Sport against hunger
The “Sport against Hunger” campaign was created through a partnership between Focsiv and CSI, with the aim of mobilizing the Italian sports community and public opinion on the issues of the right to food and food sovereignty. Through sporting events, awareness-raising and engagement activities, the campaign aims to support 58 food security projects promoted by the Focsiv member network in countries most affected by hunger and malnutrition.
Sport, a universal and inclusive language, is here valued as a tool for educating global citizenship, fostering participation, and providing concrete support to vulnerable communities. The campaign also involves collaboration with the FAO and will last approximately 18 months. During this period, through social initiatives and sporting events held across Italy, activities will be supported to guarantee the right to food even in the most fragile contexts, through school and community canteens, nutritional training, and access to seeds, water, and equipment.
The campaign aims to support initiatives to combat malnutrition and raise awareness within the Italian sports community, and Italian society in general, on this issue. In fact, worldwide, one in four children lives in severe food poverty, with up to a 50% higher risk of suffering acute malnutrition, a potentially life-threatening condition. Around 150 million children under the age of five are undernourished, especially in the poorest and most vulnerable countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, where the most severe crises overlap: armed conflicts, environmental disasters, and structural inequalities.
Through the campaign, projects will be supported that ensure at least one nutritious meal per day for children in the most fragile contexts, through school snacks distributed in schools and after-school programs, nutritious meals for infants and mothers, community and school canteens, community gardens, training, and support for family farming.
